One person is dead and two others are seriously injured after a car crash in Christchurch overnight.

Two cars collided about 10.55pm at the intersection of Salisbury and Durham streets in the central city.

Police said last night the injured pair were taken to Christchurch Hospital.

The name of the dead person would be released when their next of kin were advised.

The intersection was closed until 4am and the serious crash unit is looking at what happened.

"While it is too early to establish the exact cause of this crash, police wish to remind motorists of the need to wear seatbelts and to remain alert at intersections," a police statement says.
