"I didn't go right down, there was a body in the road which put me off."
His neighbour Alan Gillies said the "thump" from the crash woke him up and he went outside to find the car split in half.
"It hit the bridge and then went onto the bridge. It had split from the windscreen down the middle."
Another man is in a critical condition after his car crashed into a parked car in Mt Maunganui about 4am.
The crash occurred on Ocean Beach Rd between Golf Rd and Concord Ave, causing the road to close.
The driver this evening remained critical in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit, a spokeswoman said.
Just hours later, another man was seriously injured after his car came off the road and rolled in the paddock of a 20ha farm south of Auckland.
Emergency services attended the Kingseat incident on Glenbrook Rd about 7.30am.
The car went through a fence, landing on its roof in the paddock, and the driver had to be cut out.
He was flown to Middlemore Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and is now in a stable condition.
Property owner Anne Phillips said the family was hopeful the driver would have a speedy recovery.
"[The fence damage] is the least of our worries. We just hope the guy in the accident is going to be okay," she said.
A less serious crash on the Northwestern Motorway this afternoon saw two people taken to hospital.
The crash happened shortly after 1.30pm near the Point Chevalier exit and two people were taken to Waitakere Hospital in a moderate condition.
