A teenager is dead and another person is in a critical condition after a car hit a power pole in Cambridge shortly after midnight.
The car then spun out of control for about 50 metres before it hit a tree on the front lawn of a residential property on Browning Road, police said.
The 17-year-old male driver died at the scene and three passengers were injured.
A 20-year-old man is listed as being in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.
Senior Sergeant Gillian Meadows said the driver, who was on a restricted licence, appeared to have been driving too fast for the road conditions.
