One person has died after two vehicles collided in Central Otago.
The crash happened at the intersection of State Highway 85 and St Bathans Loop Rd near Becks.
Police said the road remains closed and could be for some time while police examine the scene.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible. Detours are in place.
A police spokeswoman earlier said people were believed to be trapped in both vehicles.
Fire and Emergency services southern shift manager Mau Barbara said two trucks were at the crash, with another two on the way.
Fenz was alerted to the crash at 3.22pm.
The NZ Transport Agency said it was a "serious incident".
The highway has been closed at Omakau and the Ida Valley turn-off and diversions are in place.
Whooping cough is particularly dangerous for newborn babies and older adults.
