One dead in Southland crash

One person is dead after a fatal car crash in Southland this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, at the intersection of Riversdale Waikaia Rd and Two Chain Rd in Riversdale, Southland.

The crash involved two vehicles, and the male driver of one of the vehicles died in the collision, police said.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said it was alerted to the incident at 9.36am.

"We sent the Otago rescue helicopter to the scene, as well as a rapid response vehicle and two ambulances," he said.

Two people were treated at the scene and were flown to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department, he said.

One, a female in her late teens, had "very serious injuries", while a second person had moderate injuries.

Police Serious Crash investigators were currently at the scene and police said enquiries were continuing into the cause of the crash.
