One dead in remote BOP house fire

One person is dead following a house fire in a remote settlement in the eastern Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

Fire fighters were called to Waihau Bay, 107km northeast of Opotiki about 3.10pm, said Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips.

A body was discovered in the house, but there were no details on the age or sex of the victim.

The house was completely destroyed in the fire and was close to collapse, Mr Phillips said.
