KEY POINTS:
One man is dead after his car crossed the centre line and smashed into a power pole in Central Otago last night.
The crash happened on State Highway 8 just north of Lawrence, at 7pm.
The 53-year-old died from the impact. His name has not yet been released.
Three people have been killed on the roads during the Christmas holiday period, although one victim, an 80-year-old man from Warkworth, northwest of Auckland, may have died of a heart attack and if so, would not be included in the road toll.
On Christmas Day, a man was killed when the car he was in rolled on SH2 in Waikato.
The holiday toll period finishes at 6am on January 3.
