One dead in fiery car crash

The accident happened on the bridge crossing the Wairau River.

One person is dead after a truck and ute collided on a one-way bridge in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough.

It happened on the bridge over the Wairau River on State Highway 63 about 1.30am on Sunday.

Both vehicles caught fire and two fire engines were called to the scene.

Two people in the truck were taken away by ambulance, but police said they were uninjured.

Police said the truck caught fire following the crash and needed to be towed from the scene.

Until that happens, motorists in the area are told to expect delays.
