A man is dead after a single vehicle crash near Masterton early this morning.
Emergency services were called to Masterton-Castlepoint Road near the small settlement of Tauweru about 1am, where a vehicle has smashed into a bank.
The sole occupant of the car, a 31-year-old man, died at the scene, only kilometres from his house.
The cause of the crash is not yet known, but police believe the man was not wearing a seatbelt.
A diversion around the crash scene is in place - with traffic diverted along Te Parae Rd and into Masterton-Stronvar Rd while the Police Serious Crash Team conduct a scene examination.
The diversion is expected to remain in place until mid-morning.
The victim's details will be released once next of kin have been advised.
