One woman is dead after a car crashed into a tree in Te Anau this afternoon.
The 61-year-old Israeli woman was a rear-seat passenger in a rental vehicle heading south from Homer tunnel on the Te Anau-Milford Sound Highway.
The car reportedly left the road and collided with a tree in what were described as clear, fine conditions.
The driver of the car and another passenger were transported to Invercargill Hospital by helicopter and ambulance. Their injuries have not yet been confirmed.
