KEY POINTS:
At least one person is dead following a collision between a tractor and car near Hamilton this afternoon.
Police said emergency services were at the scene and had called in heavy salvage equipment to remove the tractor, which had crushed the car and remained on top of it.
The crash happened on State Highway 39 about 3km south of Te Kowhai.
"Initial indications are the car had a sole occupant, now deceased, however a final assessment can only be made once the large commercial tractor has been removed," Waikato police district communications manager Andrew McAlley said.
The road was expected to be closed for up to three hours as the scene was cleared.
