One dead, another in critical condition after car rolls in Coromandel

Indications are that there are serious to critical injuries, police say.

One person has died after a car rolled in the Coromandel this afternoon, and another person left with critical injuries.

Emergency services, including a helicopter, attended the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Tairua Road (SH 25), south of Pukepoto, around 12:30pm today.

Fire and Emergency said they extracted two occupants from the vehicle after it had rolled and trapped them.

Police confirmed at 5:15pm that one person died in the crash and a second person was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

NZTA reports SH25 is closed between Tairua and Hikuai due to the crash, and police diversions are in place.

Police said the road will remain closed until around 11pm tonight, and advised motorists to avoid the area.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.
