One dead after truck rolls on Desert Road

One person is dead after a truck and trailer unit rolled north of Waiouru in the central North Island late last night.

Police said the truck which rolled on State Highway 1, about half way between Waiouru and Turangi, was "a mess" and a police team had been at the scene since about 11.30pm.

The victim was believed to be the truck driver.

Turangi volunteer firefighters and paramedics attended but the driver was dead when they arrived.
