A man has died after the car he was driving crossed the centre line and collided with a van in Palmerston North early today, police say.
The vehicles crashed on Aokautere Drive, near the Cashmere Drive intersection, just south of Palmerston North, about 1.15am, Constable Perry Karatau told NZPA.
The driver 28-year-old Palmerston North driver and sole occupant of the car was cut free from the vehicle by the Fire Service, but died at the scene, police said.
The 32-year-old Napier driver, and sole occupant, of the van was taken to Palmerston North Hospital with a broken foot. He has since been discharged.
The serious crash unit examined the scene earlier this morning, Mr Karatau said.
