One person was killed and another seriously injured after a dramatic crash in rural Waikato this morning in which a passing car hit a ute and flew over a creek.
The southbound car was attempting a passing manoeuvre near a bridge on Gillard Rd in Ngahinapouri, about 18km south of Hamilton, when it collided with the southbound ute's right side about 7.47am.
Waikato police spokesman Andrew McAlley said the ute crashed through a paddock fence and came to rest on its side in the creek, while the car flew over the creek and crashed.
The car's driver was trapped and died at the scene, while the ute's driver was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
The police serious crash unit is investigating and the death has been reported to the coroner.
