One person is dead after their car went off a bridge and into a river about 120km north-west of Whangarei tonight.
Senior Sergeant Chris Money said police were called to the scene on Thursday around 8.45pm, where a car was found submerged in the Waimamaku River.
The fire service retrieved the car, which was upside down in the river, around 11pm, spokesman Paul Radden said.
He said firefighters were assisted by a farmer with a tractor.
