A person is dead after their car hit a horse near Matamata tonight.
Inspector Ian Brooker said the accident happened on Hopkins Rd, a rural road near Matamata around 6:30pm.
Mr Brooker said the dead person's details would not be released immediately.
The deceased person was the only person in the car at the time of the crash, a spokeswoman for St John ambulance said.
Mr Brooker said a veterinarian was sent to the scene to put down the horse.
