KEY POINTS:
A person is dead after a boat capsized near Opua, in the Bay of Islands, yesterday.
Inspector Kerry Watson said three people were thrown from the small boat when it capsized at about 2pm.
Two of the boaties swam ashore and raised the alarm.
Mr Watson said a coastguard rescue boat was launched. The two survivors went back into the water, helped by locals, and recovered the body of their friend.
He said no further details were available and the death will be referred to the coroner.
