Five college players have been named in the Wairarapa-Bush women's sevens rugby team to contest a central regional tournament at Massey University on Sunday, August 12.
And coach John Kendal believes many of the youngsters in his line-up have the potential to be serious contenders for the New Zealand team at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
Shyanne Aporo, Sinead Namana, Kata Matapuku, Te Aniwa Hurihanganui and Annemike Van Vliet all impressed Kendal enough in lead-up trial matches and training sessions to be part of the 12-strong squad.
The younger breed will be joined by Black Fern Shakira Baker, who departs this week with the national women's sevens team to play in the Oceania tourney in Fiji, Tatiana Tafatu, Perri Tatana-Williams, Laura Gavin, Amy Williams, Awhina Namana and Jeresha Whiley. Tafatu will lead the side.
Six teams will contest the regional tourney - two from Wellington and one apiece from Hawke's Bay, Manawatu, Wairarapa-Bush and Taranaki.
