Starship patient Christian Toomata got to meet the New Zealand Olympic men's cycle sprint team yesterday, just weeks before they head to London for the Games.
Despite being shy, the 14-year-old, who is regularly treated for bronchiectasis, a chronic lung disease, was happy to chat to the cyclists.
Team coach Justin Grace said the cyclists had a spare morning so Sam Webster, Ethan Mitchell, Matt Archibald, Simon van Velthooven and Eddie Dawkins volunteered to cheer up the children at the Starship.
The hospital's charitable foundation is trying to raise $5 million to rebuild the medical specialties and neurological wards where Christian is treated.
