Half a dozen retired Manawatu greyhounds are doing their bit to save their canine friends by being blood donors.
Veterinarian Neil Marshall rescued the six, which were destined for be put down at the end of their racing careers, the Manawatu Standard reports.
His New Zealand Companion Animal Blood Bank, on a farm near Feilding, is the only private animal blood bank in the country and supplies blood to clinics from the Bay of Islands to Invercargill. The blood bank can also supply cat and alpaca blood on demand.
Mr Marshall started the business after he left his veterinary practice in Paraparaumu and wanted to stay within the industry.
"I don't think it's a bad deal for them [the dogs]. They get to live, run around and eat good food. They have a pretty nice life."
