Police have released the name of a 22-year-old man who died while boogie boarding at a Bay of Plenty beach at the weekend.
He was Sumit Goel, an Indian national, who had been living at Ohope, 6km east of Whakatane.
He and a friend were boogie boarding at Ohope Beach on Saturday when they got into difficulty.
Members of the local jet ski and surf life saving clubs found Mr Goel lying face down in the water shortly after saving his friend.
He was pulled from the water but was unable to be revived.
