KEY POINTS:
An Auckland police officer flagged down by a motorist yesterday found himself overseeing a roadside birth.
Constable Paul Lockwood of Papakura got more than he bargained for when he went to help a woman on Porchester Road about 12.30pm.
He found the woman's daughter in labour in the passenger seat of the car.
"I think the head was already out by the time I got out, so I called an ambulance and the baby just came out."
Mr Lockwood's unexpected event, which fit well with the police recruiting slogan "Get some better work stories", was overheard by other officers listening to the police radio.
Police protocol was dropped temporarily as congratulations came over the radio with the announcement of: "It's a boy".
The mother and baby, both in reportedly good health, were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Mr Lockwood told NZPA he had been working for the police for about a year and had never had something like that happen.
"It was definitely unusual - really not something you expect when you come to work."
