A woman police officer was punched and kicked when she tried to intervene in a domestic incident in Mt Maunganui early today, police said.
Police were called to a house in Maunganui Rd, Mt Maunganui, at 1.30am.
Acting Senior Sergeant Darryl Brazier said two police officers were confronted by a man attacking and threatening to kill a woman.
When police tried to intervene, the man attacked the officers then attempted to flee the scene, he said.
He punched a female police officer, knocking her to the ground, then started kicking her before being overpowered and handcuffed by the other officer, according to police.
The female officer and the woman at the house both received medical treatment although their injuries were not thought to be serious.
A man will appear in Tauranga District Court today charged with injuring with intent, aggravated assault, threatening to kill and resisting arrest.
