The occupants of a stolen car threw beer bottles and a car jack at a police cars during a chase south of Blenheim last night.
Police said the pursuit began after a Mitsubishi station wagon reported stolen from Blenheim left a service station in the town without paying for petrol.
At 11.40pm the car was seen by police travelling south on Main Street. It did not stop when signalled to do so by police.
As the car was pursued on State Highway 1, the occupants threw items, including a car jack, headrests, bottles of beer and a glove box, at the patrol car.
The stolen vehicle's tyres deflated when it ran over road spikes on the Hurunui River Bridge, the tyres crashing into a ditch.
The driver fled but was apprehended by a police dog handler receiving minor injuries.
No one else was hurt.
Police said four males, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested and were being processed for a variety of offences.
