Police say a man who left his car on train tracks at Oamaru was inviting disaster.
The man was trying to take a shortcut but his car became stuck on the tracks.
He then got out of the vehicle and tried to alert the train driver, but wasn't seen.
Inspector John Doherty said trying to drive across the tracks was a foolish idea.
"Well it's common sense really, you don't go off the highway, it was just a disaster waiting to happen really. I understand he's done it before and got away with it, but hasn't on this occasion."
