NZSO doco did not breach standards of good taste - BSA

A documentary going behind the scenes of the New Zealand symphony Orchestra (NZSO) did not breach the standards of good taste, according to the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA).

A complaint that the programme hosted by Jeremy Wells about the NZSO has not been upheld.

The complainants said that Wells made references to sexual activity, nudity and bodily functions during The Grand Tour, which screened on Prime in July.

They argued that these sorts of comments should have been edited out.

The BSA said because they programme screened at 8.35pm, outside children's viewing times, and was classified as PGR, it had not breached the standards of good taste and decency.

They also noted Wells is well known for his presenting style and type of humour.

"While we acknowledge that some of Mr Wells' comments were clearly designed to shock and may have been unexpected for viewers unfamiliar with his style, in our view, overall, he was duly respectful towards the programme and towards the NZSO."

The NZSO has said it had no editorial control over the programme but it was able to view the programme before it went to air.
