An Auckland speed camera has overtaken a notorious Wellington speed trap as the busiest in the country.
The West Auckland camera, on Great North Rd between Kirby St and Awaroa Rd, Glendene, last year photographed 10,484 speeding motorists - almost 30 a day.
This is almost 3000 more than the next busiest site, in the Ngauranga Gorge, Wellington, which snapped 7658 motorists.
That camera has previously been the country's busiest.
Revenue figures are not available for the cameras, but if the Glendene location was issuing tickets at the minimum $80 - the fine for travelling between 11km/h and 15 km/h over the limit - it would have generated $838,720.
Six of the nation's 10 busiest cameras were in Auckland. One in Onewa Rd, Birkenhead, snapped 7155 motorists, followed by one in Mahia Rd, Manurewa, with 5918 tickets.
National road policing manager Paula Rose would not reveal how long cameras were left in the 56 boxes mounted on poles around the country, saying the boxes were aimed at getting people to slow down regardless of whether there was a camera operating inside them.
