By May 1999, six months after its launch, the Herald website had evolved from a static screen promoting the company into an actual news service carrying selected items from the Herald's print edition as well as some classified advertising.
The news stories were taken from the main sections of the daily paper: News, Business, Sports and Entertainment.
The Herald's share-trading site, www.stockwatch.co.nz, was also proving popular and remains an important part of the company's online services.
Pictures were quite small in 1999, to reduce download time. Remember the excitement of "moving up" to a 14.4kbps modem?
Web hosting was still outsourced and far from trouble-free.
"I can still remember all the problems we had with the servers - and the number of times we were woken up in the middle of the night!"
- Patrick van Rinsvelt, nzherald.co.nz technical manager
