As the death toll in cyclone-hit Myanmar soars past 22,000, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade believes New Zealanders there are safe and well.
An Mfat spokesman said today it had managed to track down 14 out of 15 New Zealanders it knows were in Myanmar when the cyclone struck.
It is thought one other New Zealander may have left the country, and Mfat is today seeking confirmation of that.
More than 41,000 people are missing after Cyclone Nargis swept into the Irrawaddy delta on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Helen Clark has promised that New Zealand will make a contribution towards the international aid effort which is swinging into action.
The size of the donation, which would be made through NZAid to a United Nations agency, would be announced shortly, she said.
