KEY POINTS:
Condom maker Durex reckons New Zealanders are getting plenty of sex but they are not enjoying it that much.
New Zealanders rate in the frequency of sex stakes in the global Durex Sexual Wellbeing Survey released today, having sex an average 122 times a year.
In the bedroom, we outperform Australians who have sex just 106 times a year.
But only 43 per cent of New Zealanders are fully satisfied with their sex lives.
That is way behind Nigeria, the most sexually satisfied nation, where 67 per cent are content, Mexico on 63 per cent and India 61 per cent. Japan is the least satisfied nation, where just 15 per cent are fully satisfied with their sex lives.
In the area of making sex a priority the Greeks are gods -- 80 per cent say sex is important to them compared to only 51 per cent in New Zealand. Greeks also have sex 164 times a year.
New Zealanders may need to start focusing on the quality of sex, rather than the quantity, according to the survey.
More than 26,000 respondents across 26 countries took part in the survey, including 1100 in New Zealand.
Victoria Potter, Durex NZ manager, said sexual priorities had changed over the years so it was important to track the impact of external factors.
A combination of too much stress, tiredness, lack of quality time with partners, low sex drives and lack of romance was affecting sexual satisfaction.
More than 42 per cent of New Zealanders want to feel less stressed, 40 per cent want more romance, and a further 34 per cent want a higher sex drive. These figures are similar in Australia.
"It's easy to get distracted with other activities in life - as this survey indicates. Let's hope, since we're a fierce sporting nation, the impending Rugby World Cup doesn't take our eyes off the ball in the bedroom," said Ms Potter.
Only 51 per cent of New Zealanders said that they have orgasm regularly, and men climax more often than women.
New Zealanders spend 18 minutes on each sex session -- the global average.
New Zealanders seem to be adventurous though.
Out of all New Zealand survey respondents, 10 per cent indulge in telephone sex regularly, with a further 8 per cent wanting it to become part of their sexual repertoire.
Seventeen per cent of New Zealanders would like some role play in their sex lives, while 15 per cent would like sexual fantasies.
More than three in 10 New Zealanders admitted to having experienced painful sex, while a similar number have suffered loss of libido.
Thirty seven per cent of male respondents reported difficulty in rising to the occasion, and 43 per cent admitted having problems sustaining an erection.
