New Zealand is one of the highest methamphetamine producers per capita in the world, an international law expert says.
Senior lecturer at Queensland University 's School of Law Dr Andreas Schloenhardt said drugs were one of the biggest issues facing New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific, the Press reported today.
Dr Schloenhardt told an International Criminal Law Conference at Canterbury University over the weekend New Zealand and Australia had a very high methamphetamine usage -- the highest in the world.
He said most methamphetamines were produced in Asia but about 10 per cent of the world's methamphetamine production was now in New Zealand and Australia because the demand here made it cheaper and easier to produce it.
About 200 methamphetamine labs were found in New Zealand while 350 labs were found in Australia each year.
He said relative production was very high compared with the rest of world.
"Production in New Zealand, in relative terms, is higher than in Australia."
