The New Zealand Educational Institute union will begin talks today with the Ministry of Education to demand pay increases and better job security for school support staff.
NZEI spokeswoman Gaye Parlane said many of the teacher aides, administration workers, sports co-ordinators and other non-teaching workers earn as little as $12.94 an hour - marginally above the minimum wage of $12.50.
"They do these jobs because they love doing it and they know the kids need them, not for the money."
