KEY POINTS:
A New Zealand lifeguard and a woman friend trapped in a sea cave in Cornwall for more than 10 hours were rescued after a search, the British coastguard said yesterday.
Shane Davis and Renee Potgieter, both of Christchurch, were caught by rising tides on Monday as they explored the cave a few miles north of Newquay.
Mr Davis swam to the mouth of the cave where rescuers had been shining lights.
Renee is recovering from hypothermia in hospital.
Today, Renee's mother Lesley Potgieter said she had phoned her daughter this morning.
"She didn't want to worry us and we saw a snippet in the paper here. It didn't give her name but we recognised her friend's name and contacted him," Mrs Potgieter said.
"She's recovering well."
