KEY POINTS:
A new contingent of New Zealand troops will head to Afghanistan on Thursday to help with security and reconstruction efforts in Bamyan province.
The 122-strong team will serve six months, carrying out regular security patrols, liaising with local government and helping to distribute aid and improve infrastructure, a Defence spokesman said.
The new contingent will replace 108 troops who formed the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team over the Afghan winter.
