NZ students gear-up for party on Facebook

More than 1500 Facebook users, most of whom appear to be students, say they plan to attend the "Castor Bay Beach Party 2!" on Auckland's North Shore in December.

At a similar gathering last Saturday night some 130 drunken youths refused to leave Castor Bay about 10pm. Police were pelted with bottles after they were called by residents when property was damaged. One man was arrested for jumping on a vehicle.

The mayhem mirrored a similar party at Cheltenham Beach the previous weekend.

More than 1500 people have signalled their intention to attend the December Castor Bay event, organised by student Ash Hilton, with another 440 "maybe attending".

On the Facebook page, posters do not appear to care about the residents of the area, the police, the illegality of their actions, or grammar.

Adam Ellington, whose profile picture appears to show someone throwing up, is defiant.

"This is win. We will win. Cops wont win [sic]," he wrote.

Laura Petrova Isaac also intends on going.

"ha ha went to the first one... and the next day it was all over the news and i was watching it with mum and she goes 'some children these days! im glad u dont do stupid things like this' lol... uuhhmmm.... [sic]" she wrote.

In a statement yesterday, North Shore police commander Acting Inspector Steve Kehoe said everyone had the right to use public spaces, but police asked that this use be in keeping with the nature and atmosphere of that space.

"Social networking websites appear to be a common medium used to coordinate gatherings of this nature and police will continue to monitor these sites, in addition to receiving notice and support from members of the community who use this medium," Mr Kehoe said.

He told Newstalk ZB police had received a few tip-offs and would contact Rangitoto College and other parties involved.

He said police would ensure they had special resources available if anything occurred.

Waitemata District Communications Manager Kevin Loughlin would not confirm whether police were aware of the proposed event.

"We have nothing further to say on what is being circulated through social media," Mr Loughlin said.
