Wellington researchers say they have made a major breakthrough with the discovery of a new gene they claim could control the growth of tumours.
Dr Swee Tan says the gene controls the growth of strawberry birthmarks, which are benign tumours that spontaneously shrink.
He says unlocking the mechanism of this process will give important clues for treating malignant tumours such as cancer.
Dr Tan says scientists will attempt to manipulate the genes to kill cancers internally.
