An organisation representing Muslims in New Zealand today condemned the bombings in London.
The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) said the Muslim community was deeply shocked and saddened by events in the British capital.
At least 37 people have been killed and 700 injured in explosions that tore into at least three subway trains and a double-decker bus last night (NZ time).
British Prime Minister Tony Blair blamed Islamic terrorists, but said that he knew most Muslims worldwide "deplore this act of terrorism".
FIANZ President Javed Khan said Islam denounced terrorism at all levels and described the bombings as a "barbaric act" against humanity.
"This despicable act caused by whosoever on innocent people is senseless, shameful and totally against the teachings of Islam," he said.
"Islam promotes peace and security to all mankind. It does not allow lawless action against innocent people and their property, no matter when, where or under what pretext such action might be taken."
Mr Khan said the federation, on behalf of New Zealand Muslims, offered its condolences to families who had lost relatives in the attacks.
His organisation called on British authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
