Leaders of the Muslim and Jewish communities have made a joint plea to keep racial strife out of New Zealand, after the vandalism of both a synagogue and a mosque.
The Jewish Council and Federation of Islamic Associations declared New Zealand Muslims and Jews were taking a common stance against racism.
"We are all dismayed by the current turmoil in the Middle East but we pray and work for a lasting peace daily. We have no desire to bring foreign hatred to New Zealand's shores - we only want to live peaceably with our neighbours."
Their statement yesterday attributed the destructive actions to a small minority of "vandals and bigots", saying others were ashamed of such acts happening in New Zealand.
"We call on all New Zealanders to work hard towards increasing understanding and supporting each other in times of trouble, as this is the best way to achieve peace."
Anti-semitic taunts such as "shower you murderous swine" were painted in bright green on the pavement outside the synagogue in central Christchurch on Monday night.
The mosque, in Lower Hutt, was spraypainted with swastikas and the number 666 on Sunday.
The fighting in the Middle East has also sparked an appeal by the New Zealand Red Cross, which said yesterday it would donate an initial $100,000.
World Vision is also asking for donations.
* Donations to the Middle East appeal can be made via the New Zealand Red Cross website redcross.org.nz, or by phoning 0900 31 100. A $20 donation will automatically be added to a caller's phone account.
* World Vision is also in the process of providing aid in Lebanon. Donations to its appeal can be made through worldvision.org.nz, or by phoning 0800 80 2000.
