A Kiwi woman was holidaying with the parents of a man killed in Friday's Denver cinema massacre.
Kim Millwood, of Hamilton, was with Tom and Caren Iacovelli Teves in Hawaii when they learned their 24-year-old son, Alex, was shot dead in the attack, which left 12 people dead and nearly60 injured.
"It's so unreal - to think that yesterday we were eating a fabulous lunch and chatting happily about her wonderful boys," Millwood wrote on her Facebook page.
"I am so gutted for her and Tom."
She said they thought Alex was missing and his fiancee Amanda had been killed. But yesterday they learned it was Alex who had died.
"Then we heard that Amanda was alive and unharmed - thanks to Alex's actions - but that Amanda was unable to 'wake' him as she fled the theatre. The waiting today was miserable, but the news in the end was worse."
She said Alex was a "sensitive, loving, good" person.
