Mercury's new generation big block marine engine is now available in New Zealand.
The new 8.2-litre MerCruiser is now available in two versions: the 8.2 Mag, which produces 380hp, and the 8.2 Mag HO (High Output), which delivers 430hp. Both models are available for either sterndrive or inboard installations.
The new naturally-aspirated big block features high-performance aluminium cylinder heads and has been designed to produce more power, better mid-range acceleration, lower emissions and superior fuel efficiency.
The 8.2-litre engine replaces MerCruiser's well-established 496. Capable of running on standard unleaded fuel, it is also catalyst-equipped and generates low levels of CO emissions, comparable to those of a diesel engine.
Although the new engine has its genesis in their high performance Mercury Racing division, the company says they also consulted extensively with boat builders and dealers in its design.
As a result, access to both the engine's service points and its connections have been significantly improved to simplify both installation and maintenance.
The company is also clearly proud of the way it has improved the engine's performance while adding the catalyst and maintaining fuel efficiency.
According to Derric Drake, MerCruiser's project manager, the new big block engine will deliver more power and greater mid-range torque while using a modern piston and ring pack design to ensure low oil consumption.
He says that, as well as delivering ultra-low exhaust emissions, the catalyst will also virtually eliminate exhaust fume odours.
Other features of the new engine include a higher charging amperage (15amps) at idle, lower noise and vibration, Mercury's exclusive, air-actuated seawater drain system and the fact that the engine is completely closed cooled from the factory.
The new engines are also compatible with most MerCruiser options, including Axius, SmartCraft, SeaCore and Guardian systems. Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) is available only on the inboard models.
