A video showing a 'freight hopper's' rail journey from Auckland to Palmerston North has more than 1000 views on Youtube after being uploaded on Monday.
Freight hopping is when people hitch rides on the outside of trains, without the knowledge of the rail company.
The video shows footage, shot mainly at night, of the trip with the hoppers perched between the freight containers of a moving train.
"Jump on, jump on", someone calls as the shaky camera footage shows a dash to the passengerless containers.
The hoppers have blurred their faces in all the shots which might identify them engaging in the dangerous activity.
