A recent New Zealand health survey found 1.2 million New Zealanders are obese, more than was recorded in the 2012 report.
This translated to three in 10 adults and one in nine children. Meanwhile, the global Physical Activity Report Card released earlier this year showed that for teens aged 15 to 19, only 32 per cent met the physical activity guidelines.
The NZDF is one of the country's fittest organisations and it's critical for our people to remain in peak physical condition, says Lt Gen Keating.
"Personnel can be called upon to conduct, by land, air or sea, activities such as carrying 30kg packs, completing search and rescue missions under onerous conditions, assisting in rebuilding after a natural disaster along with numerous other demanding activities in support of the nation.
"On any given day our people might be asked to push themselves and their equipment to respond to a crisis or catastrophe at home or abroad.
"So we make sure our people have the support they need to help keep them in top condition."
The 'Force Fit' app's six-week-programme assists NZDF recruit candidates as they prepare to take initial fitness tests to join the Navy, Army or Air Force. It will also provide support to anyone wanting to improve their fitness levels and get into a good routine.
The app is simple to use and is suitable for any fitness level. Best of all, it doesn't require any expensive equipment or even a gym membership. It's a back to basics, simple approach that the NZDF uses every day to keep its force fit, and now, it's accessible to all New Zealanders.
The app is simple to use and is suitable for any fitness level and available as a free download for both Android and iPhone
