Two New Zealand games athletes have been accused of sexually assaulting a teammate during drunken celebrations in Melbourne.
The city's Herald Sun newspaper says a woman claims two New Zealand cyclists tried to strip off her clothes and urinate on her at the games village on Sunday night.
Victorian police have spoken to the woman about the claims, but she has not made a formal complaint. The newspaper says she is still at the village, being comforted by the team psychologist and her family and prefers the matter be dealt with in-house.
The Herald Sun quoted chef de mission Dave Currie as saying: "I wouldn't say it's an incident. There hasn't been an incident. She has not made a complaint."
However, today Mr Currie said although he had not seen the article, "there was an incident".
"We are certainly in sport looking at some internal discipline around it. The athletes have already gone," he told NewstalkZB today.
"It certainly wasn't smart and the New Zealand team and the sport will be taking some disciplinary action around it."
When asked if the cyclists were drunk, he responded: "There was certainly some post-event revelry which wasn't smart."
He said the cyclists had no intention of undressing her and urinating on her as reported in the Melbourne newspaper.
"That is not the case. There were some hi-jinks going on that were a result of alcohol. It wasn't something that we, and I am sure they subsequently, are very proud of."
He refused to go into details of the incident.
"Certainly there has been discussion with police. We have investigated it and there will be some disciplinary action considered by the sport."The two cyclists have left the village.
