NZ athlete killed in Middle East road accident

A well known Taranaki multisport competitor has been killed in Bahrain while out training on his bike.

Cameron John Clow, 29, was riding on a footpath in the Middle Eastern island kingdom on Friday when a car ploughed into him.

The 42-year-old driver, who had allegedly been speeding, was taken into custody, according to the Gulf Daily News.

Mr Clow, from New Plymouth, moved to Bahrain with his fiancee Kate and was working as a schoolteacher.

He won this year's Bahrain Road Race Series (running) and finished in the top 10 in four New Zealand multisport races last year.

Mr Clow's profile on the Taranaki-based betterbiking.co.nz website said that though he lived in Bahrain, "home will always be near the beach in New Plymouth".

John Dean, editor of the website, said: "Cam was one of the most genuine guys I have known... he admired anyone who decided they were going to have a crack at something and work towards achieving their goals".

"Our thoughts go out to Kate and all his family at this time."

Mr Dean said he understood that Mr Clow and his fiancee were due to be married soon.
