KEY POINTS:
A nurse who tried to kiss and fondle a co-worker and made midnight calls to an ex-patient has had his registration cancelled and been ordered to pay $6000 in costs.
The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal earlier found four charges of professional misconduct against nurse Dalip Chand proved.
At a hearing in May, the tribunal was told Chand was working at Waikato Hospital when the incidents happened.
He found the telephone number of a patient from her hospital file and called her after she was discharged.
In the midnight phone call to her home number, he asked her if her husband was home. He called back at 6.30am the next morning to apologise for the call.
In another incident, he tried to kiss a female co-worker after calling her into a drug dispensary and later ran his hands over her buttocks, the tribunal heard.
The tribunal said in today's ruling that Chand's serious, inappropriate conduct over a three-year period had brought the nursing profession into disrepute.
In mitigation it said Chand had "apparently been a good nurse and was said to have related well to patients".
Also, publication of his name had had a significant impact on his family.
The tribunal cancelled Chand's registration and ordered him to pay $3000 as a contribution to the tribunal's costs and $3000 towards the Professional Conduct Committee's costs.
It also directed that details of its decision, including Chand's name, be published in a range of industry literature.
