A Wairarapa nurse was left seriously injured after one of three male patients allegedly attacked her in the back of an ambulance.
Lower Hutt Police Senior Sergeant Pat Thomas said yesterday a 28-year-old Masterton man was to appear in Hutt District Court facing a charge of injuring with intent to injure in relation to an attack late on Tuesday afternoon.
The alleged attacker was one of three male patients being transferred in a Wellington Free Ambulance vehicle from Wellington to Wairarapa Hospital, said Cate Tyrer, general manager quality and risk, for Wairarapa and Hutt Valley District Health Boards.
Mrs Tyrer said each of the patients was considered medically stable and non-acute and that having three patients aboard at once with a single nurse was "quite common when patients are transferred between hospitals".
She said that before the ambulance trip the alleged attacker displayed "no signs that he showed aggression or there was any potential for problems".
