Wairarapa players competed with notable success at the Trust House Tennis Centre annual veterans tennis tournament played in Masterton over the weekend.
The women's doubles saw Lorraine Liggins and Chris Daniell placed second in the A section behind Wellingtonians Jenny Christie and Judy Williams and an all-Masterton final in the B section where Merrilyn Bartram and Lorraine Hooper headed off the mother-and-daughter pairing of Margaret Goodall and Tracey Strang.
The men's doubles produced a local victory in the A section where Steve Hurley (Masterton) and Russell Broughton (Opaki) won from Steve Brennan (Tauranga) and Murray Paterson (Wellington).
The A section championship consolation final went to Mark Allen (Wellington) and Alan Russell (Rotorua) from Ally O'Neill (Masterton) and Bruce Day, an ex-Masterton player now based in Lower Hutt.
In the men's B grade the premier title was won by Lionel Earle (Wellington) and Don Wright (Manawatu) from Masterton duo Peter Hampson and George Passi, while winners of the B grade championship consolation event were another Masterton combination in Keith McClure and Michael Rouse.
The final of the A section combines saw Murray Paterson and Maretta Randall, both of Wellington, beat Steve Brennan and Susy Wild, both of Tauranga, while Paul and Christine Barnett won the B section from Lionel Earle and Barbara Provan, also of Wellington.
Reaching the final of the championship consolation in the B section were Paul Rountree, of Wellington, and Marie Millar, of Masterton.
The tournament attracted an entry of 123 players and with ideal weather conditions there were no problems in completing what was a busy schedule of matches.
