Not guilty plea in Dunedin morphine case

A Dunedin woman has pleaded not guilty to injecting morphine into a 39-year-old Dunedin man earlier this year.

The 36-year-old, who has interim name suppression, is jointly charged with a 56-year-old Dunedin man.

The victim was granted permanent name suppression by Judge Kevin Phillips when the case was called in the Dunedin District Court this morning.

The woman, through her counsel John Farrow, entered a plea of not guilty and elected a judge-alone trial.

She faces two counts (one jointly with the 56-year-old Dunedin man) of administering class-B controlled drug morphine sulphate to the victim on April 21 this year.

Farrow said the defendant and the victim were friends.

He told Judge Phillips that he hoped his submissions to police might result in the withdrawal of the charges.

The victim died on April 22 and the matter is before the Coroner.

The co-accused will appear in court next week.
