Like many of her friends and colleagues, Gabie George spends most of her day at her desk and regularly works through her lunchbreak.
The 25-year-old executive assistant to Green MP Holly Walker is conscious of the health risks associated with office work, having bought a Swiss ball to improve herposture while sitting at her desk. But she was unaware that sitting at her desk for long periods increased the risk of deep-vein thrombosis, which she associated with flying.
"It just seems pretty unfair that instead of flying somewhere fabulous and getting deep-vein thrombosis, you just sit at your desk doing your job all your life and get deep-vein thrombosis," she said. "I can't really change my job to stop it."
Ms George said she worked at her desk for eight hours a day and ate lunch there about four days a week.
She tries to go for five-minute strolls, but admits she sometimes works for extended periods in front of her computer.
